Common Causes of Radiator & Cooling System Problems

Coolant Leaks
Leaks can be external (visible drips or puddles) or internal (coolant leaking into the engine oil or combustion chamber). External leaks are most commonly caused by a worn radiator hose, a leaking water pump, a failing radiator cap, or corrosion in the radiator itself. Internal leaks — typically from a head gasket or cracked engine block — are more serious and require prompt attention.
Over time, sediment, scale, and debris can build up inside the radiator and restrict coolant flow. A radiator flush removes these deposits and restores proper flow. If the buildup is severe, radiator replacement may be necessary.
The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. A failing water pump may leak, make a grinding or whining noise, or simply stop moving coolant effectively. It’s often replaced alongside the timing belt since they’re accessed at the same time.
A thermostat stuck in the closed position prevents coolant from flowing to the radiator, causing rapid overheating. A thermostat stuck open causes the engine to run too cool, reducing efficiency and heater performance.

How often should I have my radiator flushed?

Most manufacturers recommend a coolant flush every 30,000 miles or every two to five years, depending on the type of coolant used. In Florida’s heat, staying on schedule with coolant maintenance is especially important. If you’re not sure when yours was last done, we can inspect the condition of your coolant and advise accordingly.
Plain water can be used as a temporary emergency measure, but it should be replaced with the proper coolant mixture as soon as possible. Water doesn’t provide the same protection against corrosion, and in Florida’s heat, it raises the risk of overheating more quickly than a proper coolant mixture.
Coolant comes in several colors — green, orange, pink, and yellow are common — depending on the formulation. What matters more than color is that it’s clean and at the proper level. Dark, rusty, or oily coolant is a sign it needs to be flushed and replaced.
Yes. Even a single overheating event can cause damage that isn’t immediately obvious — a slightly warped head gasket, for example, may not show obvious symptoms right away but will worsen over time. We recommend having the cooling system inspected after any overheating event.
