Batteries also carry a date code that tells you when they were manufactured — a useful reference when you’re trying to figure out how much life is left.

A fully charged battery should read 12.6 volts or higher at rest. With the engine running, the charging system should push that reading up to between 13.7 and 14.7 volts. If your battery is reading below those levels, it’s time to have it checked.
